The easiest way to add double knee patches to your pants.

Materials Needed

  • Jeans

  • Fabric for patches (durable fabric like canvas or denim works best)

  • Scissors

  • Tailor’s chalk or fabric marking tool

  • Measuring tape or ruler

  • Pins or fabric clips

  • Sewing machine

  • Thread matching the jeans or contrasting for a decorative look

  • Seam ripper

Instructions

1. Mark the Patch Area

  • Put on the jeans and bend your knees to identify the area that will receive the patches.

  • Use tailor’s chalk to outline the patch size and placement. Make sure they are symmetrical on both legs.

2. Trace and Cut the Patch Fabric

  • Lay the jeans flat, then trace the outline of the marked patch area onto your patch fabric.

  • Don’t worry about adding seam allowance.

  • Cut out two patches of the same size.

3. Hem the Patch Edges

  • Fold under ½ inch of fabric on all sides of each patch. Press with an iron if possible to hold the folds in place.

  • Sew close to the folded edge all around the patch for a clean, finished look.

4. Open the Jeans’ Side Seam

  • Use a seam ripper to carefully open the side seam of the jeans on the leg where the patch will go. Open enough to comfortably work with the area.

  • If the seam is serged, you may need to cut through the serging and finish it again later.

5. Pin the Patch in Place

  • Lay the jeans flat with the RIGHT side facing up. Position the patch over the marked area on the knee, ensuring it’s centered and aligned.

  • Pin or clip the patch securely to the jeans.

6. Sew the Patches On

  • Using a straight stitch, sew the patch to the jeans, stitching close to the edge of the patch.

  • Sew around all four sides, and for extra durability. Stitch again a 1/4” from your original stitch for extra durability.

  • Backstitch at the start and end for strength.

7. Reassemble the Jeans

  • Align the side seam of the jeans and pin or clip it together.

  • Sew the seam closed, following the original stitching line. Use a zigzag stitch or serger to finish raw edges if needed.

8. Final Touches

  • Trim any loose threads.

  • Press the patched area for a clean finish.

Your jeans now have double knee patches, adding both style and durability!
